Teacher as a Guide

Take a first step towards teaching where students think and seek solutions for themselves. In a four-hour workshop, experience when learning benefits from room to explore and when it needs a guide's support, then choose one change for your classroom.

  • Experience teaching methods from a participant's perspective.
  • Examine what helped you learn and why.
  • Choose how to use the experience in your classroom.

Experienced methods. A conscious choice for your teaching.

Understanding teaching approaches

Identify what helped you think independently and what you gained from talking with others. Use that experience to recognise when students need time and when a question or feedback can help.

An idea for your own class

Choose a specific approach that gives students room to work for themselves and consider how to use it in your classroom, drawing on your experience and strengths. Your first attempt gives you a chance to observe how students respond and decide what to do next.

First a participant, then a guide

Each part connects personal experience with analysis of the method used. The activity's content helps you discover your possibilities; shared reflection shows how to guide similar learning with students.

  1. Recognise what you bring

Identify your experience, interests and strengths and compare them with others' perspectives.

  2. Find applications in the classroom

In a small group, explore how to use your resources in the classroom and notice what helps you in that search.

  3. Examine the guidance and choose the next step

Examine the guide's methods and choose what to keep, change or try in your own teaching.

What you will learn

First, experience the approaches as participants. Then examine their purpose and choose how to use them when guiding learning in your classroom.
